Good fresh fruit juices and yummy pie. Had to wait a while for a table and for food, but the service is friendly and the atmosphere pleasant so didn't mind at all.

Nice restaurant for breakfast and lunch, the staff are very friendly and the service is great. Food is also very tasty.

Very reasonable prices for central london and the South Bank; serve coffee and breakfast aswell as full meals; organic seasonal British food. One of the few places to get morning sun, as of course the South bank faces North! Update: apparently they make ALL their own food; I was told 3 restaurants on the south bank all use the same supplier; Canteen allegedly have their own large prep kitchen put back- it shows with the food too! Can be busy so book.

We arrived at Canteen without a booking one Friday evening, and found the place bustling and full of energy. The staff were very helpful and friendly and put us down on the list, saying it was possibly a 1 hour wait. My friend and I sat down under one of the umbrellas outside with a bottle of Aussie Shiraz; being the Summer in London it was of course raining. In the meantime one of the waiters had found us a table (after about 20mins), sharing a table for four with two other people, which was fine. The noise level from the conversation of all of the diners was in any case high enough that I didn't feel that our conversation could be overhead. My friend and I both went for the 28-day aged Sirloin with fries, one with leaf salad and the other with green beans and garlic. It was excellent, in all the ways that steaks in UK restaurants normally aren't. The beans didn't turn up with the meal, but I mentioned this to the waiter and he came back with a freshly cooked dish within 5 minutes. Service was punctual and friendly, and overall it was one of the most enjoyable restaurant experiences in recent years. Highly recommended. Canteen is tucked in at the back of the Royal Festival Hall (i.e. in the same building, but not facing the river). Very handy for Waterloo station.
