We stayed in a Salt hotel on the edge of the Salar - every brick is carved by hand from solid crystal salt. The best way to see this place is in a 4x4 - there are plenty of companies running 3 or 4 day tours. Choose carefully, and don't go for the bargain basement option - we met a couple of super-budget groups stranded by drunken tour drivers and mechanical problems, miles from anywhere.

Salar de Uyuni with surreal views. For incredible time (if not travelling alone), have a nights sleep at the salt hotel.
